The
Britain Nepal Medical Trust (BNMT)
Drug Schemes Project (DSP)
BNMT is one of
the oldest INGO’s working in the health sector
in Nepal. It has three different programmes. The Drug
Scheme Project was started in 1969. Two schemes have
been implemented in Eastern Nepal. The Hill Drug Scheme
(HDS) is supporting private sector retailers to sell
medicines in the remote areas of eight hill districts.
The Cost Sharing Drug Scheme (CSDS) is implemented
in four districts and supporting drug supply in 36
health care outlets in the government sector. These
schemes have been implemented with close cooperation
of the government and local communities. The main
objectives of DSP are:
Supporting and strengthening
the primary health care system by developing a community
based sustainable drug supply system.
Promoting the proper use of drugs
at the provider/user level.
To improve the access of drugs
to the community.
To improve the quality of prescribing,
dispensing and storage of drugs at service outlets.
Advocacy,
discussion and training at the community and provider
level are the routine work of DSP, so it can play an
important role in providing drug information at different
levels of health settings as well as the community.
